Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe Twinjet (FSX and FS2004) |
This Messerschmitt Me 262 (Schwalbe) model for FS2004 and FSX is a great plane to install and is fairly difficult to find online. Overall, there are not many Messerschmitt aircraft of any type available for Flight Simulator X. Of the few that are online, this one probably is one of the best. In the package, you'll receive three different paints, gauges, and good graphics. All moving parts are included as well as pretty good detail with respect to the virtual cockpit and panel. In the right flight situations, this plane provides for exceptional screenshot opportunities. Of course, the flight characteristics are very good as well. I was able to take off, fly and land with the mouse yoke without any problems. The plane is lighting fast yet can be throttled down to coast into the runway like a Cessna. Installation is the same as with most other Flight Simulator X files: Simply copy and paste the extracted directory into the /SimObjects/airplanes location. The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe (German: "Swallow") was the world's first operational turbojet fighter aircraft. It was produced in World War II and saw action starting in 1944 as a multi-role fighter/bomber/reconnaissance/interceptor warplane for the Luftwaffe. German pilots nicknamed it the "Sturmvogel," (Stormbird) while the Allies called it the "Turbo." The Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war due to its late introduction, with 509 claimed Allied kills (although higher claims are sometimes made), against more than 100 Me 262 losses. As the Me 262 was widely-regarded as the Luftwaffe's top priority, all expendable materials were put into 262 production. While Germany was bombed repeatedly, production of the Me 262 was dispersed into low-profile production facilities, sometimes little more than clearings in the forests of Germany and occupied nations. Large, heavily protected underground factories were constructed to take up production of the Me 262, safe from bomb attacks, but the war ended before they could be completed. Several components of the Me 262 were built in forced labour camps. In the end, slightly over 1,400 Me 262s of all versions were produced. As few as 200 Me 262s made it to combat units due to fuel shortages, pilot shortages, and the lack of many airfields that could support the Me 262 (concrete runways were recommended as the jet engines would melt tar runways).

TNT Express Boeing 737-300F (FSX and FS2004) |
TNT Express is the world's leading business to business express delivery company and operates a significate fleet of Boeing aircraft to manage its transportation contracts. TNT Express introduced its Boeing 737-300F aircraft in 2004 and currently uses it on domestic European flights such as between Liège, Belgium, Turku and Finland. The company is said to have had a total of seven Boeing 737s in service by the end of 2007. This particular flight simulator model works with FSX (I tested this version) and FS2004. The flight characteristics are forgiving and somewhat similar to the stock 737 by Microsoft. I particularly like the flight image which provides for good screenshots and graphics excitement. That said, this is not in the same league as my overall favorite, the Boeing 727 TWA aircraft available for download here. But this certainly is a nice plane to download and try. TNT Express and its sister charter and cargo airline, TNT Airways, is headquartered in Belgium and flies to more than 67 airports everyday (mainly European airports).

Augusta A109 with various liveries (FSX and FS2004) |
The Agusta A109 (now AW109) is a helicopter manufactured by Agusta (now AgustaWestland) of Italy. It is a light-weight, twin engine, eight seat multi-purpose helicopter. The AgustaWestland AW119 Koala is a single-engine development. The sale of the Agusta A109 to the Belgian armed forces in 1988 gave rise to a bribing scandal when it was revealed the company had given the Belgian Socialists over 50 million francs to get the sale. This scandal led to the resignation and conviction of NATO Secretary General Willy Claes. The Microsoft Flight Simulator version available for download is a very good replica of the A109 and includes a high quality virtual panel (360 functionality) and detailed switch panels. I don't usually fly helicopters because they aren't easy to fly. This one, however, is fairly forgiving with respect to flight characteristics and doesn't start swooping or swinging unintentionally. You will need to be the judge of whether you want this type of aircraft. I like it. The exterior appearance is very nice and complements the interior. Several different liveries are available including an Italian Caribinieri, Medivac, commercial, and many others. If I remember correctly, there are six versions. The following Wikipedia site provides a nice overview of the specifications of the real world A109/AW109: Click here.

Antonov An-225 (with Buran) for FSX and FS2004 |
This model can be used for FS2004 and FSX. It's graphic details and handing is extremely good. Nice flight picture in the sky especially at sunrise or sunset. Easy install in both versions: Simply copy the extracted directory into the /SimObjects/ Airplanes/ folder and start FS X. Shift+E opens the door and ladder. "I" turns on smoke effects. The An-225 Mriya (NATO reporting name: Cossack) is a strategic airlift transport aircraft which was built by Antonov, and is the largest flying airplane ever built by the most commonly accepted measure, maximum gross takeoff weight. The design, built to transport the Buran orbiter, was an enlargement of the successful An-124 Ruslan. Mriya (Мрія) means "dream" (inspiration) in Ukrainian. With a maximum gross weight of 640 tonnes (1,411,000 lb), the An-225 is the world's heaviest and largest aircraft. The Hughes H-4 Hercules, known to most as the "Spruce Goose", had a greater wingspan and a greater overall height, but was considerably shorter, and due to the materials used in its construction, also lighter. In addition, the Hercules only flew once and never climbed above 70 ft (21.3 m), making the An-225 the largest aircraft in the world to take off multiple times. The An-225 is also larger than the Airbus A380 airliner, and considerably bigger than the Antonov An-124, 747-400ERF, and C-5 Galaxy, the nearest equivalent heavy airlifters. In November 2004, FAI placed the An-225 in the Guinness Book of Records for its 240 records. The Antonov An-225 is commercially available for flying any over-sized payload due the unique size of its cargo deck. Currently there is only one aircraft operating but a second mothballed airframe is being reconditioned and is scheduled for completion around mid to late 2008. The An-225 first flew on December 21, 1988. The aircraft was on static display at the Paris Air Show in 1989. Two aircraft were ordered, but only one An-225 (tail number UR-82060) is currently in service. It is commercially available for carrying ultra-heavy and oversize freight, up to 250,000 kg (550,000 lb) internally or 200,000 kg (440,000 lb) on the upper fuselage. Cargo on the upper fuselage can be 70 m long. A second An-225 was partially built during the late 1980s for use by the Soviet space program. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990 and the cancellation of the Buran space program, the lone operational An-225 was placed in storage. The six Lotarev engines were removed for use on An-124s, and the second An-225 airframe (nearing completion and awaiting engines) was also mothballed.

Tupolev TU-144 SST - Quantas Concorde for FS X |
If you've downloaded the Air France Concorde that used to be available from fsaerospace.com, please try this great Tupolev TU-144 SST (supersonic transport) aircraft. You'll note that this model is significantly more difficult to fly than a Cessna - but hey, have you ever broken the speed barrier in your trusty 172? Probably not. This model adapted for FS X by Eric Buchmann has very nice moving parts including afterburners, moving nose and winglet parts and great miscellaneous other effects. The Tupolev Tu-144 (NATO reporting name: Charger) was the first supersonic transport aircraft (SST), constructed under the direction of the Soviet Tupolev design bureau headed by Alexei Tupolev (1925 – 2001). Western observers nicknamed the plane Concordski (sometimes Konkordski), sounding Russian yet still very close to the Concorde (again, downloadable from fsaerospace.com), to which the Tu-144 was visually similar. A prototype first flew on December 31, 1968, near Moscow, two months before Concorde. The Tu-144 first broke the sound barrier on June 5, 1969, and on July 15, 1969, it became the first commercial transport to exceed Mach 2, and the fastest commercial airliner ever. Along with early Tu-134s, the Tu-144 was one of the last commercial airplanes with a braking parachute. The last two production aircraft remain at the Tupolev production plant in Zhukovsky, reg 77114 and 77115. In March 2006, it was announced that these airframes had been sold for scrap. Later that year, however, it was reported that both aircraft would instead be preserved. Currently, both aircraft are located on the open air parkings at LII aircraft testing facility, Zhukovsky. They are constantly used on MAKS Airshows. The only Tu-144 on display outside the former Soviet Union was acquired by the Auto & Technikmuseum Sinsheim in Germany, where it was shipped — not flown — in 2001 and where it now stands, in its original Aeroflot livery, on display next to an Air France Concorde.

Microsoft's Yahoo Subsides
Well, as of this week it seems the Microsoft-Yahoo engagement has ended in a crash. Unlike many other sideline spectators, I believe the acquisition by Microsoft would have been a perfect opportunity to shore up the Microsoft Web offerings which lack in countless respects. Hotmail might still be the light in the mist, but most other Web features are subpar compared to Google and Yahoo with respect to functionality, efficiency (search capabilities), and appeal. For instance, Live Search bogs me down when I want to search the Web with needless colors and graphics. The results also appear to include fewer relevant hits. And Microsoft Maps, while apparently one of the first to use 3D imaging, now enrages me with its sloth-like loading and updating speed. None of this directly affects the reason why you are visiting fsaerospace - there is no direct connection between Yahoo and any type of flight simulator offering. An acquisition - if it will ever go through on other terms in the future - may have an impact on flight simulator community sites and possible networking functions.

FreeFlight Simulator for Mobiles
I recently found this great flight simulator for use on Windows Mobile phones and other Java-enabled phones. The download is free and the graphics are very good - comparable to Flight Unlimited. Download the application at www.getjar.com and install with the Java machine. It's pretty simple - really. I used my Sprint Mogul's brower to click the download link. Java automatically took over and installed the simulator. The phone appears to work on many other phones including Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, etc.

Microsoft yells "Yahoo!"
This past week, Microsoft and Yahoo! watchers will know that Microsoft has discussed a possible unfriendly takeover of Yahoo! for a per-share offer reportedly to be up to $44.6 billion. This news probably won't affect Microsoft Flight Simulator anytime soon, but wouldn't it be nice to see better integration of Flight Simulator with the Internet in terms of easier Internet flying, real time weather, real time airport traffic conditions and add-on sharing? Wouldn't it be great to have a Microsoft-flavored Web flight simulator built on top of the Microsoft or Yahoo! maps systems similar to what Google has offered as an "easter egg" in its Google Earth application? In any case, here are a few news reports tracking this latest Microsoft development: Microsoft Watch, Boston.com.
